What is Muhurtham?

‘Well begun is half done’, they say. As you want to accomplish your task successfully you choose an auspicious time for starting or performing an important event/action in life. It is called Muhurtham. It is a fortified lagna based on Panchangam. It means five attributes of Hindu Calendar day that is Thithi, Vaara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. It predicts natural phenomena like eclipses. It involves understanding an individual’s zodiac sign.

Vedas say there are certain moments declared as auspicious and inauspicious. During the inauspicious time, our actions, if at all started, will never be fruitful. The days to be avoided are Ashtami, Navami, Eclipse (Grahanam), Rahu Kalam, Ema Kandam. The auspicious time is chosen for marriage, to start business, project, long journeys, cesarean, consummation, a bridal see or swayamvaram. It has been ingrained on us from the days of yore that the auspicious time will certainly augur well. The Star Barani doesn’t suit for a well-start. For laying foundation stone or sowing seeds a proper time will be chosen to prosper in future. They require the Sukla Paksha (Valarpirai) or the period from New Moon to Full Moon (the waxing time of moon).

The cases in the courts need to be started during the Krishna Paksham (Thei Pirai), when a waning period of the moon occurs. The building demolition gets accomplished if started at the above mentioned time.

Can we Fix Muhurtha with Calenders?

Hindus believe in conducting marriage ceremony at an auspicious day at an auspicious moment. Nowadays every daily calenders give the list of Muhurtha days. We cannot fix marriage on All Muhurtha Days. The auspicious day must be suitable for the Bride.

Role of Planets in Fixing Muhurtham

The planets in Transit (Kocahra) are very important. Which Rasi and Star the moon occupies are important. It should not be in a negative position for boy and girl.

In our South Indian Culture girl moves to Boy's house immediately after the marriage. She has to face New atmosphere and influences. Therefore the next few days should be supportive for the girl.

Next aspect is fixing Shanti Muhurtham (First Night) during that particular day. There would be no malefic planet in the 7th House from the Muhurtha day. The marriage should not be fixed during the period when Venus (sukra) is afflicted in Transit, since Venus is important planet for Marital Happiness.
